In August, the Emerging Maine Sheep Entrepreneurs visited a sheep farm in Dedham, Maine. Northern Exposure Farm—just east of Bangor—is run by Jim and Janet Weber who have been producing milk since 2010. The sheep are Friesian and the milk is mostly sold to Maine cheese makers. Jim is a large animal veterinarian and was a wealth of knowledge about improving milking genetics and managing production-limiting diseases. The event was organized by Maine Sustainable Agriculture, with Dick Brzozowski greeting all visitors. The question to we fiber practitioners on the tour is whether spinners would enjoy Friesian fleece—a very soft, downy, highly-crimped fiber similar to Finn.
